Quicksilver: Launching

Just like I mentioned it yesterday, today is the first of, hopefully many, tips regarding the application Quicksilver. The main and most used function is it's ability to launch applications, folders, and files. Just by the press of a trigger (the default trigger is "ctrl + Space"), Quicksilver's bezel appears in the middle of the window. Quicksilver's bezel is the graphical interface which is famous for it's three panel display and the simplicity of the design. So continue after the jump to learn some basic and advanced features to the launching ability of Quicksilver.

Once the application is up and running, with the simple trigger of "Ctrl+Space" (or if you changed the trigger, to whatever you set it to) the bezel will appear. Now, your bezel may look different so just go Quicksilver's preferences and you can change the colors to your fancy.

When you first run it, you will be greeted with this bezel. It's blank now but just begin typing and the first panel will constantly change to whatever you type. Quicksilver uses a score system to determine what file/application/folder appears. The more you launch that specific item when you use a certain letter, the higher the score is. For instance, when I type the letter "S",  Safari is the first application to show up. But if I type "St", Steam appears first. It's as simple as that.

Now you can change what shows up in Quicksilver. Just go to the preferences, press the Catalog icon in the top right corner, and from there you can change what folders it can catalog, what applications, etc.

If you want to open a folder or application, all you have to do is press "Enter". This is because the default action for those types of files is "Open". If you wanted to do something else like Move the item, reveal it in Finder, or even rename it, instead of pressing "Enter" press "Tab" instead and it will highlight the Action Panel instead.

Same concept as before but instead of objects, you have actions. They change depending on the object you have. You can create a new folder if your object is a folder, rename the file, or reveal the application in Finder. It's amazing what it can do.

Now the third panel is usually used for additional information. Let's return to the example I used earlier. When I pressed "S", Safari would show up in the Subject Panel, but if I press "Down", the additional panel would fill up with items. In my case, Safari would show up first followed by Steam and Skype. Let's say I wanted Steam to be the default instead of Safari, all I would have to do it right click on Steam in the additional panel and choose "Set as default for 'S'."

It's a simple application and that can get very advanced with an endless amount of possibilities. Hope you'll enjoy it as much as I have.

Here's a small bonus tip. You can queue items in Quicksilver. Just choose the object and the action you want and press ",". It will add a small icon under the object panel and allow you to choose the next item you want. If you want to remove it, press "Delete".

Sync your Blackberry to your Mac. Finally!

[caption id="attachment_892" align="alignnone" width="459" caption="RIM's Desktop Manager"][/caption] This tip is for those Blackberry owners with their only computer being a Mac. This past October ('09), RIM finally released their desktop manager for Macs. Before, the way to upgrade your phone's firmware was to use the PC's client. It was very difficult for users to upgrade their phone's software that didn't a PC so they were stuck using the old firmware. And believe me, the upgrades are a giant leap in usability. The latest updates improved the internet browser, media player, and overall stability.

The desktop manager not only upgrades the phone's firmware but you can also sync your contacts, calendar schedule, tasks, media, and most importantly backup your phone. No more asking people for their phone numbers. Instead when you get a new phone you can just connect it to your mac and choose to sync the contacts from your Mac to your phone.

The iTunes integration is solid with options to sync specific Playlists or just add random music to the remaining space on your media card.

You can get the desktop manager here from RIM's site.

System Requirements:
At least Mac OS X 10.5.5
Your Blackberry's firmware needs to be at least 4.2
(You can check your version by pressing Alt+ Left Shift + H on your phone and look up the App Version. For example mine says App Version: 5.0.0.328 (508))

An Easy Way to Download Files

DownThemAll screenshot I've been busy with midterms this past week so today's tip is going to be a quickie. If you've ever found yourself downloading a lot of files from a website, you know it can be a drag clicking, even right-clicking for a lot of cases, every link that has the file you want. To help you prevent a case of carpal tunnel syndrome, I present you DownThemAll. DownThemAll is a download manager add-on for Mozilla's web browser, Firefox. It not only manages your downloads but it also does behind the scene actions like download accelerating. The main reason why I use it so much is the ability to scan sites for all sorts of media. Whether the files are pictures, movies, audio, or even archived files like .zip and .rar, it generates a list of all the links on the page and you just choose the files that you want.

It's as simple as that. DownThemAll works on Firefox for both Windows and Mac. You can download and find out more about DownThemAll here. And to use DownThemAll, you need Firefox but you already have that. Right? RIGHT? If not, shame on you and download it here.
I got the the HTC Incredible… but optimizing battery?

YES! I did get the HTC Droid Incredible. It is INCREDIBLE!  I received my phone, yesterday, May 06, 2010 via FedEx because they were out of stock. I was not home when it arrived but i did call to see who was home... so when they got the phone they could put it to charge right away. Many of us cant resist to play with a brand new device right away BUT it is very important to charge the battery to 100% before using it. It will harm you battery if you don't charge and use it right away. In basic terms the battery has memory that says what its max's charging capacity is. Also, if you buy a cell phone and a car charger do not charge it in the car charger right away. The car charger will only do a quick charge which will not help. You must charger it  to a wall outlet to max capacity.
