Put a YouTube Video On Repeat

Just found out about a nifty site/service for those who listen to music on YouTube (me included). EndlessYouTube is the name, fittingly enough, and does exactly what the name suggests; It constantly plays a YouTube video on repeat until you choose to stop it. Sure you can do it yourself but the simplicity begs you to use it instead. All you have to do is add "endless" to the beginning of the URL and you're good to go. You get the YouTube URL of the video you want, in this example I'll use Gorillaz' (Some of the best music you will ever hear) Tomorrow Comes Today video. So you have your URL, http://youtube.com/watch?v=0KxHqJwO1-Q, and change it to http://endlessyoutube.com/watch?v=0KxHqJwO1-Q.

You can also just grab the video ID, in this case it's "0KxHqJwO1-Q", head over to EndlessYouTube and paste the ID into the appropriate box. The service does have it's faults though. Because it's using the embedding feature, it won't work with videos that turned off embedding.

Another amazing feature is you can choose to loop over a segment of the video. Just use this format http://www.endlessyoutube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID&start=[e.g.%201m10s]&end=[e.g.%201m20s] and choose the segment you want to loop.

Google it!

The answer is Google it! I have had friends ask me for answers and I have said Google it. Pretty easy answer, huh. Now lets throw in a little hook. How about next time you say, "let me look it up for you and I'll send you a link like this." WWW.LMGTFY.COM, is a website that stands for "Let me Google that for you", a website that lets you do just that. It is a script that Google searches based on your keyword and redirect to Google.com . So next you answer a question go to www.lmgtfy.com and put in their keywords and click "share link below" and a link will appear. Copy and send the link to the person with the question. done! I bet they will be really grateful that you answered their  question.

Are you bored? Have you heard of google reader?

Facebook is a time waster. Many of us go on every single day to see what is happening to who and why and OMG! Yes, it can get out of control. Here is a little tip for... maybe a little less drama and sometimes a chuckle... Google Reader. Google Reader is a RSS feed collects that accumulates content. Basically, if you have sites that you go to a lot and  wish you could see  all of the content in one place this is the tool for you. Grab the RSS from the page you always go and stick it into your Google Reader account. If you want to skip that step and get a random funny collection go to www.google.com/reader/play. Still, I can guarantee the waste of time.

An Easy Way to Download Files

DownThemAll screenshot I've been busy with midterms this past week so today's tip is going to be a quickie. If you've ever found yourself downloading a lot of files from a website, you know it can be a drag clicking, even right-clicking for a lot of cases, every link that has the file you want. To help you prevent a case of carpal tunnel syndrome, I present you DownThemAll. DownThemAll is a download manager add-on for Mozilla's web browser, Firefox. It not only manages your downloads but it also does behind the scene actions like download accelerating. The main reason why I use it so much is the ability to scan sites for all sorts of media. Whether the files are pictures, movies, audio, or even archived files like .zip and .rar, it generates a list of all the links on the page and you just choose the files that you want.

It's as simple as that. DownThemAll works on Firefox for both Windows and Mac. You can download and find out more about DownThemAll here. And to use DownThemAll, you need Firefox but you already have that. Right? RIGHT? If not, shame on you and download it here.
Find alternative software with alternativeto.net

" I don't want to buy Photoshop", many have said. "It is too expensive and I only need it for simple things." Yes there are  alternatives to Photoshop  like GIMP and Paint.NET. They are good alternatives and will do the job but what if you need an alternative to Windows Media Player or just other software and maybe even find something for free. Well, a site called Alternativeto helps you find exactly what you need. It can help you find software for mobile phones and all major platforms. Just put and search the software and you will have the answer at your finger tips.

League of Legends | MOBA Gaming Gone Wild

Download and play League of Legends for FREE here

With the rapid advancement of technology in recent years, many things have found their true homes to reside on the internet, and the same can be said for video games. Since the first games like pong and Super Mario Bros, there have been many different directions that games have gone. One of which can be simply described as massive online game-play.

Online gaming was first introduced on the PC, and has since found its way onto the console game market. While everyone has heard of the MMO ( massively multiplayer online game) World of Warcraft, I think it is safe to say that even games like Call of Duty and Halo can be considered massive, multiplayer and online. ( Although I will note that MMO is a stereotype of a very specific style of gaming, like WoW, Aion, etc). So basically, many games in the modern market are designed for massive online multiplayer action! And today, I am here to introduce you to one of my favorites:

For all of you DotA fans out there, you might recognize this one. This is a standalone version of the Warcraft III custom game, called DotA, or Defense of the Ancients. Created by a few of the original makers, what is now known as Riot Games has created a much improved version of the game, complete with a bounty of beautifully designed characters. Check out this Art Spotlight of a new champion, Lee Sin:

The term MOBA stands for Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, and has basically spawned from games like these. In League of Legends, you select a champion that you level up from level 1 in each game. But, as you progress, your achievements are kept track of on your profile, and you can unlock Masteries and Runes to help you no matter which character you play. The teams are either 5v5 or 3v3, and the goal is for you and your friends to defeat the other players and destroy their "Nexus" ( their base ). Each champion has a special set of skills, and teams are best when they are balanced with a carry, the person who is the most powerful and gets the majority of kills, a tank, someone who has lots of health and armor, a support character, usually an off-tank and some kind of healer, and 2 other damage dealers. This kind of gameplay can best be described through video, so check out this video of the champion Ashe, doing something creative with her ultimate move, which allows her to shoot a huge arrow across the map.

So I recommend giving it a try, after all, it IS free. Please leave your feedback in the comments, and add your Summoner name if you need a friend to play with!

Google Street View and me

Many of us know that Google has  a service called Google maps with a  feature called Google street view. This is well  know  by many, but I was fortunate to bump into the Google Bike around SBCC taking pictures. They have a guy on a bike with a small hitch on the back with  360 degree cameras and a power generator.  The guy was really friendly and encouraged us to do whatever. So, next time you see a bike like this or a car that has the Google logo all around. Take your five minutes of fame and appear online.

Gmail: Organize Your Inbox

Gmail's logo using the 8-bit themeGmail is Google's own e-mail service. Many regard it as the best web mail provider today because of all the extra features and simplicity of the service. Not only that but Google continues to innovate the e-mail interface and experience with Google Labs, previously mentioned here on OneTechTip. But today, I'm going to talk about two features that when used correctly, can easily organize and clean up the clutter that can gather up in one's mail. The first is the Labels feature and the second is the Filters feature.

After the jump, I'll go into detail on how to use these two effectively to clean up your mailbox.

Difficulty Level: Easy

Labels

Where the Labels tab is located

Labels can help you organize e-mails by acting as folders so you can find them easier in the future and clean up your inbox.

To create a label, go to Settings, which is located in the top-right corner of the page, and click on the Labels tab. Here you can create labels and once they're made, you can choose to show, hide, or remove the label. Show and hide are options if you want your label to be listen on the left hand side of the site.

The following are suggestions for Labels that could be the most useful: School, Work, Ads, Receipts, and even Facebook and Twitter.

You can manually label your e-mails but a much simpler and quicker way is to use Filters.

Filters

Filters are going to do most of the work and what makes all of this possible. The way Filters work is it searches who it's from, who it's to, the subject, if it has certain words, or if it doesn't have certain words.

From the Labels tab, just move one over to the right, and choose the Filters tab. Here you can create new filters, edit or delete filters you already have. Once you've created it, you can change the criteria to choose which e-mails you want to filter. Once you're done, click on the "Test Search" button Gmail will show you which e-mails it will filter. From there you can continue to add more criteria and run another test search to see if it fits your needs. Once you're satisfied with your results, click "Next Step" and a list of actions with check boxes next to them.

Actions that apply to filtered messages

Here, you choose what will happen to the e-mails that get filtered. The most important one is the "Skip the Inbox" action. What this does is send your e-mail to the archive but once you apply the correct label, you can easily find them and search even more within those specific e-mails. Another action that I frequently use is the "Mark as read" action. My OCD in me always makes sure I don't have any unread mail so this action is a godsend. I apply it to un-important e-mails that don't require anything from me. E-mails that I leave unread are e-mails from credit card companies, bills, school, etc. The next action is what makes all of this work. Choose which label you want to apply to the filtered messages and you're ready to go. Make sure you choose the "Also apply filter to X conversations below" check box as this takes the e-mails that came up from the previous test search and applies the correct label. The rest of the actions are useful. I don't use them so much but they might be handier for you.

These two features, when used correctly, can not only clear up your inbox, but make e-mails that much easier to find. Just click on the correct label and if you need, search within the labeled e-mails. You can also aesthetically change your labels by changing the color of your label but that's usually not so important. So check it out and add a comment to see what other handy uses you've come up with.

Facebook privacy and just everywhere!

For some weird reason I do not trust Facebook but I do trust Google. Recently, Facebook has changed their terms of service a couple of times. If you have not noticed in the past, some security settings might have moved. It should not be our job to stay up with security. We should be able to use the service without worrying.  I would check your settings on Facebook under Account>Privacy settings. PLEASE dig under every little tab and setting and read! Facebook is tricky. This does not apply just to Facebook but check all your social networks , email, and online accounts! You will thank us later :-)

Here is a link from allfacebook.com that will show you ten10 Privacy Settings Every Facebook User Should Know.

Staying Secure online. IMPORTANT!

Many of us forget how vulnerable we are online. Our cyber life is as important as our daily physical life. I will post some important points to be protected online.

1.) You are the first line of the defense. You have control on where you click. So, do not click on links or attachments from people you do not know. Do not visit any website that might look suspicious.

2.) Be aware of social engineering. "Social engineering is the act of manipulating people into performing actions or divulging confidential information, rather than by breaking in or using technical hacking techniques (essentially a fancier, more technical way of lying)". The famous Koobface virus has been roaming on Facebook. If you receive a message from anybody saying " hey i saw you yesterday and took these pics of you. click here." This is probably not true and are trying to make you click on the link.

3.) Run windows update! Keep it up to date. This is essential to patch any holes where hackers might get in.

4.) Have a anti-virus running in the background. We recommended Microsoft security essentials. Check one of our last posts.

5.) Have long complicated passwords. Refer to one of our past posts.

Are you using Gmail?

Many of us have our Gmail account. But did you know? That Google has Google labs( a green flask in the upper right hand corner). Google labs are experimental features that can be turned on.  Many are added to enhance the email experience.  Just recently two where added. 1.) By right clicking on an email a preview of that email would show up. 2.) You can organize your labels in a  hierarchy. So if you have a Gmail account go ahead and play around and see what treasurers you might find.
