How to unsubscribe from a newsletter

We have gotten use to SPAM in our email. It is sad how we just delete it and end it there. Email was not invented to handle SPAM and prevent it.  Today, we also sign up for services and they take our email and send us daily, weekly or even monthly newsletters. How do you stop that? I'll got through some steps you might try.

1.) Try finding an unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email. Click it and you may be redirected to a new page confirming you have unsubscribed  or sent an email. Legally all newsletters have to have a way to unsubscribe by the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003.

2.) If does not work or there is no link try calling the company. They can not be doing that by CAN-SPAM Act of 2003.

3.) If all fails and you may just need to set a filter in your email to delete the newsletters.

Optimize Your Computer the Easy Way

Do you want to spend the least on optimizing your computer? Well here's a fast and cheap way to do it. This process  is not a time-consuming thing. First, find your way to the control panel by clicking on the start menu and selecting the control panel. Then hover the mouse over the page until you find the icon that says programs and features (windows 7 /Vista) or add or remove programs (windows XP) and then click on it. Then scroll through your list and select the unnecessary programs and then click uninstall. Recommended: Run the PC's defragmenter utility to organize loose files.

Picasa a free photo editing and organizing software

Google has many great services but did you know about Picasa. Picasa lets you organize your pictures, like itunes for music. Also, you can edit pictures like crop, adjust tint, color, and many other tricks. My favorite feature is how it has face tagging. Picasa scan all your pictures and makes an album based on a face. I have my pics all organized. Oh, I almost forgot if you do not have your pictures backed up this is a great opportunity because Google can sync all your pictures to the Picasa web.

Do You Need An Account Lockout in Windows 7?

Well, in the first place, this is an option that can be enabled by the computer owner. It allows the computer to lock it self down if to many times a password has been punctured incorrectly on the log in window. This is a useful thing because it gives hackers a more troublesome time into getting access to your things. This can be enabled by following these steps. Click on Start, then click All Programs, then click Administrative Tools, then click Local Security Policy  After that, a window will pop up. In the left pane of the window, click the tab that says Account Policies. Then click onto the sub tab called Account Lockout Policy. This is the place where you can change how many times a user can try to log in into his/her account.

How secure is your password?

Ever wondered how long would it take for someone to crack your password! Well I have. How secure is my password?, can estimate  how long someone would take to crack your password. It really does make me, at least, ask myself how strong is my password? The longer it takes for someone to crack your password, then the stronger it is. My password would take about 19 million years! Anyone up for the challenge?

A great week with a bad time zone

I am part of an organization called SHPE (The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers) where I attended a conference, NILA 201 0 (National Institute for Leadership Advancement). I had a great week at the conference but also had some very weird experiences. Todays tip will be on time zones, you will see what to do when you travel. To some, it might be common sense but lets say I learned my lesson. I will start from the very beginning where I picked up a friend Wednesday morning.

On Wednesday, I arrived to pick up my friend and was waiting a few minutes in the car. Then, I decided to get out and stretch my legs. I got out and to my surprise a skunk appeared right in front of me. I was toast. My week ahead of me flashed in front of my eyes. I would lose the conference if I smelled like skunk. I was very scared, I moved a little, and he got into defense mode. Tail shot right up. I did not move anymore. My heart stopped. He slowly backed up and ran away. I was safe!  My heart regressed back to normal  mode and I was finally calm. I was no longer going to risk smelling like skunk. Everything was normal . I arrived at the conference and enjoyed it. I learned a lot and am happy to say that I am a proud member.

Here is where I present to you my tech tip.  It was about 4pm when I was updating OneTechTip.com  at the hotel, Sunday afternoon. I was planning to leave towards the airport at 5pm. My plane  leaving at 7:20pm. It was a good amount of time to give myself to check in, pass through security, and all those normal steps. I was working hard and looking at the time on my laptop. At 5:00ish I put everything away and was ready to go. I then looked at  my cell phone and saw it was not 5:00ish it was 6:20pm!  I could not believe it. I had not changed the time zone on my laptop! I was late and was running the risk of missing my flight. I was so desperate. I rushed to the front desk and asked for a cab. I waited outside and the cab would not arrive. Finally it did. It was about 6:45 when it arrived. The drive  to the airport was normal if you can imagine me scared to death of me missing my flight. I arrived to check-in and gave my ticket to the Frontier flight personal. I thought I was safe when he said, "you are late and we can no longer take your baggage".  I had another skunk moment, my heart dropped. I argued so much with the guy to put my luggage on board. He said due to security reason he could no longer do that. I tried everything from shipping my luggage to asking for the supervisor. He gave me no chance. I called my friend who was all ready waiting for me inside, he had arrived early because he had visited his family. I talked to him and he told me to leave the big luggage and put everything I could into a plastic bag. I desperately did that. I asked the Frontier flight personal for a bag. It was awkward because I transferred everything from my big luggage to a plastic bag and my backpack. I finally did that. My bags were stuffed. I then rushed to security and guess what. They stopped me. I was already late because of what just happened. Security asked me to take my laptop out and put in another bin. I had to take out everything and do what they said. I finally got through security and rushed to get some souvenirs and on board I got. The flight home was suitable.  I arrived home with some turbulence, the flight was about to arrive late and I was going to run the risk of not connecting my flight in Denver. Oh, and on my flight from Denver to Santa Barbara I forgot the souvenirs.  I'll say it was an awesome experience with many lessons learned.

You may ask," ...and the tech tip?" Well, check your gadgets like Cell Phones, Laptops, GPS and other electronics and make sure they have the right time based on the time zone. Some should do that automatically. The second tip is taking your laptop out or having in another bag when passing through security. I believe these are simple tips but may one safe you life.

Play HALO in your browser

HALO is one of the best games of all time. Also, the game is key to the Xbox but in your browser? Ok ok I know it's not your  HALO. It is the  Atari 2600 Version of Halo. Yes it plays in your browser. If your to young to remember Atari 2600 is a video game console released in October 1977 by Atari, Inc. That is old.  The graphics are not that great but it is a good trip down memory lane. Go to Halo 2600.

Create a free mailing list

At some point in time we have volunteered or been on a board of a club/organization. We have had the need to send out weekly/monthly emails or newsletters to our members to keep them informed. There is a free service called Mailchip. MailChimp allows you to build a mailing list with many cool features. One key feature is how it does not put a burden on you to manage who wants to unsubscribe and subscribe.  Another key feature is,  the integration to social networks. It connects to Facebook, LinkedIn, and many more. This is must have tool for your club/organization.

What is Really the Control Panel?

Well the control panel does or handles most of the maintenance, upgrade, and more of Windows. With this you can configure how you want Windows to show up as. You can configure its audio settings, display settings, and much more. There are two ways to view the control panel, the traditional way and the category way. The traditional way, shows or lists all the icons that you can change. The category way, groups similar things, like display and audio.

The 20- 20- 20 rule. Reduce computer eye strain.

I include myself in saying that we go through hours at a time staring at a screen. That magic box in front of you that takes you right in into a different world. Do you even blink? There is a rule called "The 20 - 20 -20 rule". This rule gives us some basic numbers so we can avoid dry eyes, red eyes, purple eyes, and just any color of eyes. The point is, we need to rest our vision. Just follow these numbers: Every 20 minutes take a 20 second break to look at objects 20 feet away. That;s it. Try  it to rest your vision hard at work.

Create a free account on itunes

We all (basically) have ipods, ipads, itouches and have been forced to create a itunes account to download music, tv shows, and apps.  Now, I just found out that apple has allowed you to create a free account since in the past you were forced to enter a form of payment.  If you feel more secure of  apple not having your credit card then, switch to a free account, by opting out.
