See where your money goes

Is the economy in a bad situation or is the media the problem to blame? I still live my normal life, not saving much, till I found Mint.com. This service lets you manage your budget, expenses,  and investment. It has an iphone and android app so you can see it on the go. I use it to see if nobody has used my debit card. Also, if you use your credit card and debit card for everything you can see how much you waste on food, gas, shopping and much more. I strongly recommended it. Oh, and about security do not worry Mint's back-end(servers) use the same security as banks. So don't worry much.

Secure sites using https

Are you a Firefox user? Most people are. Are you concerned about your online security? You very well should be. If you did not know, you can tell when you are on a secure site by checking the address bar in your browser.

That is tip number one. The next tip is forcing your browser to put https on most of the sites you go to. That way you are 100% secure that nobody is reading your data by packet sniffing. In order to force your browser to put https you need Firefox and a plug-in called HTTPS Everywhere. This plug-in will force https on sites like:

  • Google Search
  • Wikipedia
  • Twitter and Identi.ca
  • Facebook
  • EFF and Tor
  • Ixquick, DuckDuckGo, Scroogle and other small search engines
  • and lots more!

How to unsubscribe from a newsletter

We have gotten use to SPAM in our email. It is sad how we just delete it and end it there. Email was not invented to handle SPAM and prevent it.  Today, we also sign up for services and they take our email and send us daily, weekly or even monthly newsletters. How do you stop that? I'll got through some steps you might try.

1.) Try finding an unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email. Click it and you may be redirected to a new page confirming you have unsubscribed  or sent an email. Legally all newsletters have to have a way to unsubscribe by the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003.

2.) If does not work or there is no link try calling the company. They can not be doing that by CAN-SPAM Act of 2003.

3.) If all fails and you may just need to set a filter in your email to delete the newsletters.

Facebook has exposed you. Not yet?

How public is your Facebook page? Do you care? Who is searching for you? Your future employer? There is a website called Zesty.ca/facebook. This website tells you what is publicly available to the whole world.  Just recently some people scraped Facebook and bundled a lot of public data and put it up as a torrent. Many people have downloaded that torrent since.  Could you be in that bundle? Make sure you are 100% in control of your profile. Go to the website to to see what is public. "To find your Facebook ID or alias, go to your Facebook profile and look at the URL bar in your browser. If you have a numeric ID, it will appear at the end of the URL. If you have an alias, it will appear right after "facebook.com/".

Convert a website into a PDF

PDFmyURL.com is a website that converts a website into a PDF. Why might you need this? Well... One reason, if on that page you need to show someone your transcript and have to email it to them. Another reason, if somebody sends you a URL and you are scared to click on it. You may just copy the link into PDFmyURL.com and see what the website is. There are many uses for this kind of service. How secure is your password?

Ever wondered how long would it take for someone to crack your password! Well I have. How secure is my password?, can estimate  how long someone would take to crack your password. It really does make me, at least, ask myself how strong is my password? The longer it takes for someone to crack your password, then the stronger it is. My password would take about 19 million years! Anyone up for the challenge?

A great week with a bad time zone

I am part of an organization called SHPE (The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers) where I attended a conference, NILA 201 0 (National Institute for Leadership Advancement). I had a great week at the conference but also had some very weird experiences. Todays tip will be on time zones, you will see what to do when you travel. To some, it might be common sense but lets say I learned my lesson. I will start from the very beginning where I picked up a friend Wednesday morning.

On Wednesday, I arrived to pick up my friend and was waiting a few minutes in the car. Then, I decided to get out and stretch my legs. I got out and to my surprise a skunk appeared right in front of me. I was toast. My week ahead of me flashed in front of my eyes. I would lose the conference if I smelled like skunk. I was very scared, I moved a little, and he got into defense mode. Tail shot right up. I did not move anymore. My heart stopped. He slowly backed up and ran away. I was safe!  My heart regressed back to normal  mode and I was finally calm. I was no longer going to risk smelling like skunk. Everything was normal . I arrived at the conference and enjoyed it. I learned a lot and am happy to say that I am a proud member.

Here is where I present to you my tech tip.  It was about 4pm when I was updating OneTechTip.com  at the hotel, Sunday afternoon. I was planning to leave towards the airport at 5pm. My plane  leaving at 7:20pm. It was a good amount of time to give myself to check in, pass through security, and all those normal steps. I was working hard and looking at the time on my laptop. At 5:00ish I put everything away and was ready to go. I then looked at  my cell phone and saw it was not 5:00ish it was 6:20pm!  I could not believe it. I had not changed the time zone on my laptop! I was late and was running the risk of missing my flight. I was so desperate. I rushed to the front desk and asked for a cab. I waited outside and the cab would not arrive. Finally it did. It was about 6:45 when it arrived. The drive  to the airport was normal if you can imagine me scared to death of me missing my flight. I arrived to check-in and gave my ticket to the Frontier flight personal. I thought I was safe when he said, "you are late and we can no longer take your baggage".  I had another skunk moment, my heart dropped. I argued so much with the guy to put my luggage on board. He said due to security reason he could no longer do that. I tried everything from shipping my luggage to asking for the supervisor. He gave me no chance. I called my friend who was all ready waiting for me inside, he had arrived early because he had visited his family. I talked to him and he told me to leave the big luggage and put everything I could into a plastic bag. I desperately did that. I asked the Frontier flight personal for a bag. It was awkward because I transferred everything from my big luggage to a plastic bag and my backpack. I finally did that. My bags were stuffed. I then rushed to security and guess what. They stopped me. I was already late because of what just happened. Security asked me to take my laptop out and put in another bin. I had to take out everything and do what they said. I finally got through security and rushed to get some souvenirs and on board I got. The flight home was suitable.  I arrived home with some turbulence, the flight was about to arrive late and I was going to run the risk of not connecting my flight in Denver. Oh, and on my flight from Denver to Santa Barbara I forgot the souvenirs.  I'll say it was an awesome experience with many lessons learned.

You may ask," ...and the tech tip?" Well, check your gadgets like Cell Phones, Laptops, GPS and other electronics and make sure they have the right time based on the time zone. Some should do that automatically. The second tip is taking your laptop out or having in another bag when passing through security. I believe these are simple tips but may one safe you life.

Play HALO in your browser

HALO is one of the best games of all time. Also, the game is key to the Xbox but in your browser? Ok ok I know it's not your  HALO. It is the  Atari 2600 Version of Halo. Yes it plays in your browser. If your to young to remember Atari 2600 is a video game console released in October 1977 by Atari, Inc. That is old.  The graphics are not that great but it is a good trip down memory lane. Go to Halo 2600.

Create a free mailing list

At some point in time we have volunteered or been on a board of a club/organization. We have had the need to send out weekly/monthly emails or newsletters to our members to keep them informed. There is a free service called Mailchip. MailChimp allows you to build a mailing list with many cool features. One key feature is how it does not put a burden on you to manage who wants to unsubscribe and subscribe.  Another key feature is,  the integration to social networks. It connects to Facebook, LinkedIn, and many more. This is must have tool for your club/organization.

Update your drivers

Many of us, usually update our computer drivers by going to Windows Update and looking in the hardware section but I have found an easier way. There is a website called My-Config.com. This website can help you find recent drivers for all your hardware.  To begin the process go to http://www.ma-config.com/ and click on "Run The Dedication" button. It may prompt you to install a plug-in. Go ahead. After that,  click "start detection".  Then "find the drivers". A list will populate on their website with links to download out-dated drivers.

Using Gmail? Did you know about the "+"?

Our email accounts has been very valuable for us, we register to social media sites, commerce sites, and even banking sites. Today's tip is not on security but productivity. If you are using gmail and do not know about the "+" you are missing out. First, let me introduce how to use the "+" then I'll explain why to use it. Gmail may see “[email protected]” when receiving an email but did you know that “[email protected]” are the same. The only difference is that you include the "+" followed by a KEYWORD. Gmail grabs that keyword and creates a filter. Now, why is this handy? Why to use it? Next time you are signing up at a website, use the “+” operator and create a filter to apply to that email address. based on the keyword. This way you can organize your filer by keywords like Social Media, Junk, school, bank and other helpful things. Organize your email. If you have any questions feel free to leave a comment. :-)

Safari: Adblock +

Firefox: Adblock +

... download it and install. Be ad free online!
